This is not to say I didn't love the romance between the two leads, because I did indeed. Speaking of, where is Rebecca anyway? Does she know she's not engaged to Raphael any more? Someone should tell her. Just didn't ring true-Raphael doing it in the first place and then Andrea's multiple refusals to forgive him after he told her the truth about Rebecca. The main thing that made my rating 4 stars rather than 5 was the Rebecca foolishness-seemed like a tool to prolong the conflict between Andrea and Raphael after the real conflict that had broken them up had been resolved. Some of my favorite scenes in the book were between these two. Andrea working her investigation with Ascanio as her sidekick was certainly reminiscent of Kate and Derek, but still fun. Ilona Andrews delivers the goods with vivid description, loads of action and deeper characterization of folks who had been more or less the supporting cast in the other books. Andrea's approach to life is in many ways similar to Kate's, but their motivations and histories are different enough that this novel, told from Andrea's point of view, was fresh and interesting. This was just the thing after finishing Magic Slays and having no more Kate Daniels novels until July.
